emergency contraception ('after-pill')

Emergency contraception ('after pill') can prevent pregnancy after sexual assault or contraceptive failure (for example, a broken condom). It works best when taken as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours after unprotected sex. While it is not 100% effective, the sooner it is taken, the more effective it is.
It is available at pharmacies without a prescription from around ¥7500. You can also visit a clinic or hospital.
There is no age restriction and parental consent is not required.
It is not covered by insurance.
Some pharmacies may ask for your ID.
It is recommended that you check for pregnancy using a pregnancy test (self-test ↓) three weeks after taking the after pill.
